From 15 June to 10 July 2015, ahead of the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and the 500th anniversary of the creation of the Ghetto, both in 2016, the Centre for Study and Documentary Research into European Theatre and Opera and Ca’ Foscari University, Venice, have organised the Shylock Project. The overall project consists of the “Shakespeare in Venice Summer School”, an intensive course of study exploring the text and context of the Merchant of Venice and the main character, the Venetian Jewish Shylock, plus many events open to the public: lectures and performances in English at various venues in the city.

The programme also includes a preview of the production of the Merchant of Venice that the Compagnia de’ Colombari are due to stage next year for the first time ever in the Campo del Ghetto in Venice.
