The Fondazione Giorgio Cini Institute of Art History in collaboration with the Musée Picasso, Paris will launch the first stage in a three-year programme of events devoted to the life and work of Pablo Picasso on Thursday 24 and Friday 25 November 2016 by staging an international  conference entitled Picasso-Méditerranée I. Le passé enfui; l’Italie, in the splendid setting of the Cenacolo Palladiano (Palladian Refectory) on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Through the papers presented and exchanges of ideas between the invited scholars and directors of major international museums holding works by the great artist, the conference sets out to explore and further knowledge about Picasso's relationship with Mediterranean culture. There will be a focus on how his study of the ancient world and his many journeys played a significant role in shaping his artistic development, mindset and imagery.

The conference is the first stage of an innovative three-year project, entitled Picasso-Méditerranée, promoted by the Musée Picasso, Paris in association with other international institutions, aimed at exploring and celebrating the genius of Pablo Picasso (1881–1973). The intense programme of exhibitions, publications and conferences will also be illustrated at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini.
